Crooked Tooth - Phillips Brewing , 5% ABV, (Victoria, BC, Canada)
“brewed with pumpkin and spices”
My notes:
Tasting notes: pours clear orange with a shade of brown, almost zero head, a few slow-moving CO2 streams. Baked pumpkin pie on the nose. Tastes of cinnamon, nutmeg, light caramel up front, tingly-creamy mouthfeel, but body fizzles in the mids to the finish. Finishes watery, malty, and leaves a roughness on the tongue. Medium complexity, medium depth, good transitions, okay carry, good drinkability. A decent pumpkin ale, not the best, but worthy of trying once.
Deckhand Belgian Saison (Seasonal) - Lighthouse Brewing, 8% ABV, (Victoria, BC)
On the back label:
“Deckhand Saison is a rich, golden, Belgian farmhouse style beer. Pilsner and Vienna malts added with flaked wheat gives this beer a soft malt character while the unique attributes of a true Belgian yeast strain add spicy, peppery and fruity flavours. The acidic sourness and dry finish complement the noble hop character of Styrian Goldings hops. True to this artisan style of beer we present it unfiltered so that you can taste the full flavour of this complex and very satisfying brew. A stemmed tulip glass will enhance the aroma and support the large foamy head.”
Tasting notes: pours golden orange with a decent thick foamy head, ringed retention, lots of fast-moving CO2 streams. Barnyard, tangerine, light malts, and honey on the nose. Creamy and tingly mouthfeel, tastes of bitter orange peel, 7/10-level sweetness, tangerine, medium malts, transitions into a long off-dry lingering heavy bitter finish. Medium complexity, medium depth, great transitions, good carry, decent drinkability. Slightly thin at the finish and a somewhat overly aggressive lingering bitterness.
Blueberry Pail Ale - Phillips Brewing, 5% ABV, (Victoria, BC)
On the side of the front label:
“Blueberries blueberries it’s that time of year, to grab them by the handfuls and throw them in beer. It’s crisp and refreshing a summertime treat, straight from our magical beer factory. So if you are looking for fun from an ale, try popping the cap on this blueberry pail.”
Tasting notes: pours purplish/red/brown, minimal head, ringed retention with micro CO2, lots of fast-moving CO2 streams. Fruity fieldberries on the nose. Burst of blueberry fruit up front, 5/10-level sweetness, creamy mouthfeel, medium sourness, medium malts, hints of caramel, crisp finish with an off-dry tart finish. Low-medium complexity, medium depth, okay transitions, okay carry, medium bodied. Decent drinkability and okay to try once.
Tessier’s Witbier - Buckerfield’s Brewery Swans Hotel & Brewpub, 5% ABV, (Victoria, BC)
-brewed with wheat and spices
My Notes:
Tasting Notes: pours golden yellow, very nice thick foamy head, good thick retention, lots of sticky lacing, lots of active CO2 streams. Filtered apple juice from concentrate on the nose. 4/10-sweetness level, notes of Sun-rype apple juice, sharp fizzy CO2, light malt, coriander, and ends with a soft dry bitter finish. Medium complexity, light-medium depth, okay carry, good length, good drinkability. Drinks like a hybrid apple-cider/wheat beer. Unique experience for me but failed to wow.
Smooth Sailing Honey Ale - Buckerfield’s Brewery Swans Hotel & Brewpub, 5% ABV, (Victoria, BC)
-brewed with fireweed honey
My Notes:
Tasting Notes: pours topaz with a thick foamy head, foamy retention, sticky lacing, very active fast moving CO2 streams. Muted nose. Drinks 6/10-sweetness level, watery texture, aggressive burpy carbonation, tastes of bittersweet honey, hints of grapefruit, ends with a lingering sharp bitter hoppy finish. Medium complexity, medium depth, okay carry, good transitions, good drinkablility. A variety of elements - sweet, bitter, hoppy, crisp, honey. Too watery and thin for my tastes however. In addition, the bitter finish is too heavy and off-balanced.
Coconut Porter - Buckerfield’s Brewery (Swans Hotel & Brewpub), 5.5% ABV, (Victoria, BC)
-brewed with organic coconut
My Notes:
Tasting Notes: pours coffee brown, minimal quickly dissipating head, thin layer of retentino, micro CO2, lots of average-speed moving CO2 streams, sticky lacing. Light roasted coffee on the nose. Aggressive 5/10-sweetness level up front, mix of creamy/fizzy texture, rush of lightly roasted coffee, slighty coconut nuttiness, prune/fig fruitiness, chocolate, and finishes slightly sour, off-dry, and 3/10-bitterness. Medium complexity, medium depth, okay carry, okay transitions, good drinkability. Slighlty watery overall, but drinkable and decent.
Belle Royale - Driftwood Brewery, 9% ABV, (Victoria, BC)
On the side label:
“Each bottle of this Belgian-inspired ale is laden with 1/2 pound of Morello sour cherries, which pack an orchard’s share of flavor! This beer’s high alcohol content will ensure successful ageing [sic] for those interested, but don’t deny yourself the pleasure of this beer fresh!”
My Notes:
Tasting Notes: pours reddish-copper, minimal quickly dissipating head, medium CO2 size, barely any retention, zero lacing, average speed CO2 streams. Very fragrant Morello cherry nose, almost cotton candy like. Deep 2/10-sour 5/10-tart cherry start, puckering mouthfeel at 14C, slight bitterness near the mids, zero traces of alcohol. Low-medium complexity, medium-depth, great balance, good carry, excellent drinkability. This beer goes especially well with salty foods. Quite refreshing when drunk at 3-5C. Creeper alcholic effect.
Mass Extinction (Ice Barley Wine) - Phillips Brewing, 12% ABV, (Victoria, BC)
On the label:
“Just like the dinosaurs this barley wine was ice-aged at glacial temperatures. Throughout the fermentacious period water underwent a chrystaline phase transition which distilled the remaining liquid into a naturally-sweetened nectar of caramel flavour. Being an archaealcohologist never tasted so good.”
My Notes:
Tasting Notes: pours bottle dark brown, minimal head, very thin ringed retention, minimal thin lacing, barely visible streams. Strong coffee and caramel aromas on the nose. Lethal alcohol base (vodka-like) is apparent immediately and persists throughout, heavy bitter caramel in the mids, thick malts, 5/10 sweetness, slight mintyness, 3/10 coffee bitter finish. High depth, medium complexity, long length, good carry, okay transitions, okay drinkability. Surprisingly drinks okay for 12% ABV, not something I would drink again though.
